Hadith #7604
Narrated by al-Faḍl bin Sahl: “Yazid bin Harun narrated to us from Khalifah bin Musa: ‘I entered upon Ghalib bin Ubayd Allah and he began dictating to me: “Mak’hul narrated this to me,” “Mak’hul narrated that to me.” Then he got up to go to the toilet. I looked in his notebook and saw: “Aban narrated this to me from Anas,” “Aban from so-and-so.” So I stopped listening to his hadiths and left.’” I heard al-Hasan bin Ali al-Hulwani say: “I saw in one of Affan’s books a hadith from Hisham Abi al-Miqdam, that is, a hadith from Umar bin Abd al-Aziz. It said: ‘Hisham said: A man, apparently Yahya bin so-and-so, narrated to me from Muhammad bin Ka’b…’ I said to Affan: ‘It was said that Hisham heard it directly from Muhammad bin Ka’b.’ He replied: ‘Indeed, Hisham was accused of lying about this hadith, because he would first say: “Yahya narrated it to me from Muhammad,” and then he would later claim to have heard it directly from Muhammad.’”
