حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: إِنَّ أَصْدَقَ كَلِمَةٍ قَالَهَا الشَّاعِرُ، كَلِمَةُ لَبِيدٍ: أَلا كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مَا خَلا اللَّهَ بَاطِلٌ، وَكَادَ أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ.
Muhammad ibn Bashar told us, saying: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi told us, saying: Sufyan al-Thawri told us, on the authority of Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, saying: Abu Salamah told us, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The truest statement a poet ever made was the statement of Labid: ‘Verily, everything besides Allah is falsehood.’ And Umayyah almost Ibn Abi al-Salt wanted to convert to Islam.
