Ubadah b. Walid b. Samit reported:I and my father set out in search of knowledge to a tribe of the Ansar before their death (i. e. before the Companions of the Prophet left the world) and I was the first to meet Abu Yasar, a Companion of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and there was a young man with him who carried the record of letters with him and there was a mantle prepared by the tribe of Ma'afiri upon him. And his servant too had a Ma'afiri mantle over him. My father said to him: My uncle, I see the signs of anger or that of agony on your face. He said: Yes, such and such person, the son of so and so, of the tribe of Harami owed me a debt. I went to his family, extended salutations and said: Where is he? They said: He is not here. Then came out to me his son who was at the threshold of his youth. I said to him: Where is your father? He said: No sooner did he hear your sound than he hid himself behind my mother's bedstead. I said to him: Walk out to me, for I know where you are. He came out. I said to him: What prompted you to hide yourself from me? He said: By God, whatever I would say to you would not be a lie. By Allah, I fear that I should tell a lie to you and in case of making promise with you I should break it, as you are the Companion of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). The fact is that I was hard up in regard to money. I said: Do you adjure by Allah? He said: I adjure by Allah. I said: Do you adjure by Allah? He said: I adjure by Allah. I said: Do you adjure by Allah? He said: I adjure by Allah. Then he brought his promissory note and he wrote off (the debt) with his hand and said: Make payment when you find yourself solvent enough to pay me back; if you are not, then there is no liability upon you. These two eyes of mine saw, and he (Abu'I-Yasar) placed his fingers upon his eyes and these two ears of mine heard and my heart retained, and he pointed towards his heart that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: He who gives time to one who is financially hard up (in the payment of debt) or writes off his debt, Allah will provide him His shadow. I said to him: My uncle, if you get the cloak of your servant and you give him your two clothes, or take his two clothes of Ma'afir and give him your cloak, then there would be one dress for you and one for him. He wiped my head and said: O Allah, bless the son of my brother. O, son of my brother, these two very eyes of mine saw and these two ears of mine listened to and this heart of mine retained this, and he pointed towards the heart that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Feed them (the servants) and clothe them (the servants) what you wear, and if I give him the goods of the world, it is easy for me than this that he should take my virtues on the Day of Resurrection. We went on till we came to Jabir b. Abdullah in the mosque and he was busy in observing prayer in one cloth which he had joined at its opposite ends. I made my way through the people till I sat between him and the Qibla and I said: May Allah have mercy upon you. Do you observe prayer with one cloth on your body whereas your mantle is lying at your side? He pointed me with his hand towards my breast just like this and he separated his fingers and bent them in the shape of a bow. And (he said): I thought that a fool like you should come to me so that he should see me as I do and he should then also do like it. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came to us in this very mosque and he had in his hand the twig of the palm-tree and he saw mucus towards the Qibla of the mosque and he erased it with the help of the twig. He then came to us and said: Who amongst you likes that Allah should turn His face away from him? We were afraid. He then again said: Who amongst you likes that Allah should turn His face away from him? We were afraid. He again said: Who amongst you likes that Allah should turn His face away from him? We said: Allah's Messenger, none of us likes it. And he said: If one amongst you stands for prayer, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, is before him he should not spit in front of him, or on his right side, but should spit on his left side beneath his left foot and if he is impelled to do so all of a sudden (in spite of himself) he should then spit in his cloth and fold it in some part of it. (and he further said: ) Bring some sweet-smelling thing. A young man who belonged to our tribe stood up, went and brought scent in his palm. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) took that and applied it to the end of that twig and then touched the place where there had been mucus. Jabir said: This is why you should apply scent to your mosques. It is reported on the same authority: We set out along with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on an expedition of Batn Buwat. He (the Holy Prophet) was in search of al-Majdi b. 'Amr al-Juhani. (We had so meagre equipment) that five. six or seven of us had one camel to ride and so we mounted it turn by turn. Once there wan. the turn of an Ansari to ride upon the camel. He made it kneel down to ride over it (and after having. mounted it), he tried to raise it up but it hesitated. So he said. May there be curse of Allah upon you! Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Who is there to curse his camel? He said: Allah's Messenger, it' is I. Thereupon he said: Get down from the camel and let us not have in our company the cursed one. Don't curse your own selves, nor your children. nor your belongings. There is the possibility that your curse may synchronies with the time when Allah is about to confer upon you what you demand and thus your prayer may be readily responded. It is reported on the same authority: We set out on an expedition along with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) until it was evening, and we had been near a. water reservoir of Arabia. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Who would be the person who would go ahead and set right the reservoir and drink water himself and serve us with it? Jabir said: I stood up and said: Allah's Messenger, it is I who am ready to do that. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Who is the person to accompany Jabir? And then Jabbar b. Sakhr stood up. So we went to that well and poured in that tank a bucket or two of water and plastered it with clay and then began to fill it (with water) until it was filled to the brim. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was the first who appeared before us, and he said: Do you (both) permit me to drink water out of it? We said: Yea, Allah's Messenger. He led his camel to drink water and it drank. He then pulled its rein and it stretched its legs and began to urinate. He then took it aside and made it kneel down at another place and then came to the tank and performed ablution. I then got up and performed ablution like the ablution of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), and Jabbar b. Sakhr went in order to relieve himself and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) got up to observe prayer and there was a mantle over me. I tried to invert its ends but it was too short (to cover my body easily). It had its borders. I then inverted it (the mantle) and drew its opposite ends and then tied them at my neck. I then came and stood upon the left side of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). He caught hold of me and made me go round behind him, until he made me stand on his right side. Then Jabbar b. Sakhr came. He performed ablution and then came and stood on the left side of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) caught hold of our hands together, pushed us back and made us stand behind him. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) began to look upon me with darting looks, but I did not perceive that. After that I became aware of it and he pointed with the gesture of his hand that I should wrap my loin-cloth. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had finished the prayer, he said: Jabir! I said: Allah's Messenger, at thy beck and call. He said: When the cloth around you is inadequate, then tie the opposite ends but when it is small, tie it over the lower body. Jabir reported: We set out on an expedition with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and the only means of sustenance for every person amongst us was only one date for a day and we used to chew it. And we struck the leaves with the help of our bow and ate them until the sides of our mouths were injured. It so happened one day that a person was overlooked and not given a date. We carried that person and bore witness to the fact that he had not been given that date so he was offered that and he got up and received that. Jabir reported: We set out on an expedition along with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) until we got down at a spacious valley and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went to relieve himself. I followed him with a bucket full of water and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) looked about and he found no privacy but two trees at the end of the valley and Allah's Messenger (may. peace be upon him) went to one of them and took hold of one of its twigs and said: Be thou under my control by the permission of Allah, and so it came under his control like the camel who has its nosestring in the hand of its rider, and then he came to the second tree and took hold of a twig and said: Be thou under my control with the permission of Allah, and it came under his control, and when he came in the middle of the two trees he joined together the two twigs and said: join with the permission of Allah. Jabir said: I was afraid lest Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) should be aware of my nearness and go still farther. And Muhammad b. Abbad has used the word" faitab'd" and I began to talk to myself. And as I saw, I suddenly found Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) before me and the two trees were separated and each one of them was standing at its place. I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) standing for a short time, nodding his head towards right and left. Isma'il pointed towards the right and left with the help of his head (in order to demonstrate how the Prophet had pointed). Then he (the Holy Prophet) came to me and said: Jabir did you see my place where I was standing? I said: Allah's Messenger, yes. He then said: Then you should go to those two trees and cut a twig from each of them and go to that place with them where I was standing and stand there where I was standing and place a twig on the right and a twig on the left. Jabir said: I set out and took hold of a stone and broke it and sharpened it and then I came to those trees and cut a twig from each one of them. I then came dragging them until I stood at the place where Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had been standing and placed a twig on the right and a twig on the left. Then I met him and said: Allah's Messenger, I have done that, but (kindly) explain to me the reason for it. Thereupon he said: I passed by two graves the occupants of which had been undergoing torment. I liked to make intercession for them so that the might be relieved of this torment y as long as these twigs remain fresh. Jabir said: We came back to the (camp of the) army and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Jabir, call people for per- forming wudu. I cried: Come and perform wudu, come and perform wudu, come and perform wudu. I said: Allah's Messenger, there is not even a drop of water in the army camp, and there. was a person who used to cool the water for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in the old water-skin which kept hanging by the twig. He asked me to go to such and such Ansari and ask him to see if there was any water in that skin. I went to him and cast a glance in it but did not find anything but a drop in the mouth of that water-skin and if I were to draw that, the water-skin's,. dried part would suck it up. I came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: Allah's Messenger, I have not found anything in it but a drop of water in the mouth of the water-skin and now if I were to draw that, it would be absorbed. He said: Go and bring that to me. I brought that to him. He took hold of it -and began to utter something which I could not understand and then pressed it with his hand and gave that to me and said: Jabir, announce for the tub to be brought. So I announced that the tub of the army (be brought). It was brought accordingly and I placed it before him (the Holy Prophet). Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) placed his hands in the tub like this: with his fingers stretched out, and then he placed his fingers at the bottom of the tub and said: Jabir, take it (that waters-skin) and pour water over me, by reciting Bismillah, and I poured water and I said: Bismillah, and found water sprouting out between the fingers of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). Then that tub gushed forth until it was filled up and the Messenger (ﷺ) said: Jabir, make an announcement to the effect: He who needs water should take that. Jabir said: The people came and got water until they were all satiated. I said: Is there anyone left who wants to get it? And Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then lifted up his hand from that tub and it was still full. Then the people made a complaint to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about hunger and he said: May Allah provide you food! We came to the bank of the ocean and the ocean was tossing and it threw out a big animal and we lit fire and cooked it and took it until we had eaten to our heart's content. Jabir said: I and such and such five persons entered Its socket and nobody could see us until we had come out, and we took hold of one of its ribs and twisted it into a sort of arch, then we called the tallest of the persons of the army and the hugest of the camels of the army and it had the big saddle over it, and it could easily pass through it without the rider having need to bend down

[Harun bin Ma'ruf] and [Muhammad bin Abbad] have told us, the text of the hadith is almost the same and the following text belongs to Harun, both of them said: [Hatim bin Isma'il] has told us from [Ya'qub bin Mujahid Abu Hazrah] from [Ubadah bin Al Walid bin Ubadah bin Ash Shamit] who said: My father and I went to seek knowledge in this village of the Ansar before they died. The first person we met was [Abu Al Yasar], a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he was with a slave of his, he was carrying a bundle of sheets, Abu Al Yasar was wearing a Ma'afiri blanket and his slave was also wearing a Ma'afiri blanket. My father said to him: O my uncle, indeed I see the marks of anger on your face. He said: Yes. So and so and so bin so and so owed me a debt, I went to his family, I greeted him then I said the words and he said: No. Then a pot-bellied child came out, I asked: Where is your father? He said: He heard your voice. Next my mother, Arikah, came in and I said: Come out here, I already know where you are. I asked: Why are you hiding from me? He answered: I, by Allah, will tell you, I am not lying, by Allah, I was afraid to tell you and then I lied and I promised you and then I broke it. You are a friend of Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Salam and I, by Allah, am in trouble. I say: Allah. He answered: Allah. I say: Allah. He answered: Allah. I say: Allah. He answered: Allah. Then he took the sheet and wiped it with his hand, he said: If you have money, pay it off and if you don't have it you are free. The sight of my two eyes - he put his fingers to his eyes - the hearing of my two ears and the understanding of my heart - he pointed to the place of his heart - saw the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam saying: "Whoever suspends a difficult person or frees him from his (debt), Allah will shelter him in His shadow." He said: So I said to him: O uncle, if you took your slave's blanket, you took your ma'afiri slave, you took his ma'firi blanket and you put your blanket on him, of course you would wear jewelry and he would also wear jewelry. He rubbed my head then prayed: O Allah, bless him. O my nephew, the sight of my two eyes - he put his fingers to his eyes - the hearing of my two ears and the understanding of my heart - he pointed to the place of his heart - saw the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam saying: "Give them food from what you eat and give them clothes from what you wear, "I gave him the goods of this world which is lighter for me than him taking my goodness on the Day of Resurrection. We went until we came to [Jabir bin Abdullah] at his mosque, he was praying wearing a shirt which he had covered himself with. I stepped over people until I sat between Jabir and the Qibla. I said to him: May Allah have mercy on you, why are you praying with one shirt on and your shawl to the side? He gestured with his hand to my chest like this - he spread his fingers and curled them, he said: I want a fool like you to come to me and see what I do so that he can copy it. Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam once came to us in our mosque while he was carrying a branch belonging to Ibn Tab, he saw that there was phlegm in the direction of the mosque, then he scraped it off with the branch, after that he turned towards us and asked: "Which of you wants Allah to turn away from him?" he said: We are bowed. He asked again: "Which of you wants Allah to turn away from him?" We answered: No, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Indeed, when one of you prays, Allah Tabaraka wa Ta'ala is in front of him, therefore do not spit towards His face or to his right, let him spit to the left, under his left foot. And if he cannot control himself until it is preceded by spit or snot, let him do it with his clothes like this" he folded his clothes one over the other then said: "Show me the za'faran oil." Then a young man from the tribe rushed to his family quickly and came with a mixture of oil in his hand, then Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam took it and smeared it on the tip of the midrib and then rubbed it on the remaining phlegm. Jabir said: That's where you give your mosques perfume. We once walked with Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam in the battle of Buwath, he was looking for Al Majdi bin Amru al Juhadi. The camel that was being given water was guarded by five, six and seven people, then one of the camel drivers from the Ansar surrounded his camel, after that the camel was rustled and then he got on. He rubbed his camel but it remained silent, then he said to his camel: Hus, may Allah curse you. Then Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam asked: "Who cursed the camel?" He answered: I am, O Messenger of Allah. Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Salam said: "Come down, do not join in anything that is cursed. Do not pray for evil on yourself, do not pray for evil on your children, do not pray for evil on your possessions, do not obey when a prayer is answered by Allah and then He will grant it to you." We walked with Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam until the afternoon. We approached one of the Arabian waters and Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam said: "Who wants to go ahead of us and repair the well, after that he drinks and then gives us something to drink" Jabir said: I stood up and said: I am O Rasulullah. Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam said: "Who else is with Jabir?" Jabbar bin Shakhr stood up. We went to the well and then we pulled one or two buckets from the well. We lowered it and then we pulled it until it was full of water. The first person to meet us was Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam, he asked: "Do you two allow it?" We answered: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. he lowered his camel's head, his camel then drank, he held the reins and his camel spread its legs and urinated. After that he turned it around and roared it. Then the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam went to the well and performed ablution. I stood up and did my ablution using the rest of the ablution water from Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Salam. Jabbar bin Shakhr then went to relieve himself and the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam stood up to pray. I put on a blanket, I wanted to spread it but it didn't arrive. The blanket had an end and then turned it over, after that I stretched it between the two ends and then squeezed it with my neck. Then I came and stood on the left of Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam. He took my hand and turned me around to place me on his right. After that Jabbar bin Shakhr arrived. He performed ablution then came and stood to the left of Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam, then he took our hands and we were placed behind him. Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam saw me but I didn't feel it, after that I understood then he gestured with his hand, he meant tie your middle part. After the prayer, Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam said: "O Jabir!" I replied: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "If (the clothes) are wide, spread them between the two ends and if they are narrow, tie them above your waist." We once walked with the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam and each of us ate one date every day. He sucked it then put it on his clothes, and we moved the tree so that the leaves fell and then we ate it until the corners of our mouths hurt. I swear, someone among us went missing one day. Then we went looking for it and then we picked it up. We testified for him that he had not been given (the quota of dates) and so he was given it. He stood up and took it. We once walked with the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam until we stopped in a wide valley. Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam went to complete his mission, I followed him from behind carrying a bucket of water. Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam looked around, he saw nothing to cover. It turns out there are two trees at the edge of the valley. Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam went up to one of them then grabbed part of its branch, he said: "Bend down for me, with Allah's permission." The branch bent down with him like a camel with a nose made by its handler, until he came to another tree and grabbed one of its branches, he said: "Bend down for me, with Allah's permission." The branch also bowed. After he was in the middle between the two, he united them, he said: "Unite for me, with Allah's permission." The two of them became one. Jabir said: I ran away quickly because I was afraid that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would sense my presence near him and move away. Muhammad bin Abbad said in his narration: He moved away and then I sat talking to myself. I glanced to the side and saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was coming towards me and it turned out that the two trees had sprouted. Each of them was standing on its own pole. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) standing and gesturing with his head like this - Abu Isma'il gestured with his head to the right and to the left - after that he came. When he arrived in front of me, he asked: "O Jabir, do you see where I am standing?" I replied: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Go to the two trees and cut a branch from each of them and bring it here. When you are where I am standing, remove one branch from your right and another branch from your left." Jabir said: I stood up then I took a stone, I broke it then I sharpened it until it was sharp, after I went to the two trees, I cut off a branch from each of the two trees. I returned and dragged them until I stood where the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam stood. I removed one branch from my right and another branch from your left, after that I When I met Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Salam, I said: I have done it, O Messenger of Allah, then what was that for? He answered: "I passed two graves whose (inhabitants) were being punished, with my intercession, I wanted to lighten both of them while the two branches were still wet." ablution, ablution water, water ablution." I said: O Messenger of Allah, I do not find a single drop of water in the caravan. A man from the Ansar was cooling water for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in his vessel which had dried up on the wooden hangers of the vessel, then he said to me: "Go to so-and-so bin so-and-so Al Ansari and see if there is any water in his vessel." I went to him and looked at his vessel, I did not find anything except a drop of water at the end of the vessel, if I poured it out it would certainly dry up. After that I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I did not find anything except a drop of water at the end of the vessel, if I poured it out it would certainly dry up. He said: "Go and bring it here." I brought it and he took it in his hand. He said words which I do not know what they were, then he felt it with his hands, after which he gave it to me, he said: "O Jabir, call for the vessel big." I called out: Big vessel, O caravan. Then I brought it and I put it in front of the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Salam, he gestured to the vessel with his hand like this - Jabir spread his hand then stretched his fingers and placed them on the bottom of the vessel. He said: "Take it, O Jabir then pour it on me and say: 'Bismillaah." I poured it for him and I said: Bismillaah. I saw the water radiated between the fingers of Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Salam then the large vessel emitted water and spun until it was full, after which he said: "O Jabir, call out who needs water." Jabir said: People came and drank until they were satisfied. Then I said: Is there anyone who needs water? 'alaihi wa Salam then he said: "May Allah feed you." Then we went to the shore, the tide was high and we threw a fish and then we lit a fire beside it, we cooked it and grilled it and then we ate until we were full. Jabir said: I, so-and-so and so-and-so - he counted up to five people - entered the eye socket, no one saw us until we came out. We took one of his eyebrows and then we arched it, after that we called the biggest man in the caravan, the biggest camel in the caravan and the biggest pillion in the caravan, he entered under it without bowing his head

Narrated by Ubadah ibn Walid ibn Samit (may Allah be pleased with him): I had gone with my father to seek knowledge from a tribe of the Ansar before the death of the Companions. I first met Abu Yasar, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), accompanied by a young man carrying letters and wearing a Ma'afiri cloak. His servant also wore a Ma'afiri cloak. My father said to him, "My uncle, I see signs of anger or sorrow on your face." He replied, "Yes, a man from the Harami tribe owed me money. I went to his family, greeted them, and asked where he was. They said he wasn't there. His young son came out, and I asked him where his father was." He told me, “As soon as he heard you, he hid behind my mother’s bed.” I said to him, “Come, I know where you are.” He came out. I asked him why he had hidden. He replied, “By Allah, I will not lie to you. I am afraid of lying to you or breaking my word, because you are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). In truth, I am going through financial difficulties.” I asked him several times to swear by Allah, which he did. Then he brought the promissory note and canceled it with his own handwriting, saying, “Repay me when you can; otherwise, you no longer owe me.” Abu Yasar placed his fingers on his eyes and his heart and said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Whoever grants respite to a debtor in difficulty, or cancels his debt, Allah will shelter him under His shade.’” I said to him, “My uncle, if you take your servant’s cloak and give him your two garments, or if you take his two garments from Ma’afir and give him your cloak, there would be clothing for each of them.” He stroked my head and said, “O Allah, bless the son of my brother. O son of my brother, my eyes have seen, my ears have heard, and my heart has retained that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Feed your servants and clothe them as you clothe yourselves. Giving them worldly wealth is easier for me than having to give them my good deeds on the Day of Resurrection.’” “Then we went to see Jabir ibn Abdullah at the mosque. He was praying wearing only one garment, even though his cloak was beside him. I sat between him and the Qibla and said, ‘May Allah have mercy on you. You are praying wearing only one garment when your cloak is right there?’ He gestured to my chest and then said, ‘I thought a man like you would come to me and do as I do. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to this mosque with a palm branch, saw some saliva directed towards the Qibla, and wiped it away with the branch. Then he said, “Who among you wants Allah to turn His face away from him?” We were afraid. He repeated it three times. We said, “No one, O Messenger of Allah.”’” He said, “When one of you prays, Allah is before him: let him not spit in front of him or to his right, but to his left, under his left foot. And if he cannot do otherwise, let him spit into his garment and fold it.” He also said, “Bring something that smells good.” A young man from our tribe brought perfume, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed it on the end of a branch and touched the spot where there was saliva. Jabir said, “That is why you should perfume your mosques.” He also reported, “We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the expedition to Batn Buwat, in search of al-Majdi ibn Amr al-Juhani. We were so poorly equipped that five, six, or seven of us shared a single camel.” An Ansari was about to mount the camel, so he made it kneel, but it refused to get up. He said, “May Allah curse you!” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Who cursed his camel?” He replied, “I did, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Get off; we do not want to travel with a cursed animal. Do not curse yourselves, your children, or your possessions. Perhaps your curse will coincide with a time when Allah will grant your request.” He also reported: “We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until evening, near a water reservoir. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Who will go and repair the reservoir, drink from it, and serve us?’ I said, ‘I will, O Messenger of Allah.’ He asked, ‘Who will accompany Jabir?’” Jabbar ibn Sakhr got up. We repaired the water tank, filled it, and then the Prophet ﷺ came, watered his camel, and then performed his ablutions. I did the same. Jabbar went to relieve himself, and then the Prophet ﷺ prayed. I tried to cover my body with my cloak, but it was too short, so I tied it around my neck. I stood to the left of the Prophet ﷺ, and he led me behind him on the right. Jabbar came, stood to the left, and the Prophet ﷺ led both of us behind him. After the prayer, he said to me, “Jabir! When your garment is short, tie it around your waist.” Jabir also related: “We went on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and each of us had only one date a day to eat.” We chewed it and beat the leaves to eat it, to the point that our mouths were sore. One day, someone didn't receive a date, so we testified on his behalf, and he received one.” He also said: “We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and arrived in a wide valley. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself, and I followed him with a bucket of water. He found only two trees to hide behind. He took a branch from one of them and said, ‘Be under my control, by the permission of Allah,’ and the tree bent down. He did the same with the second tree. He joined the two branches and said, ‘Join together, by the permission of Allah.’” Afterwards, he asked me to cut a branch from each tree and plant them where he had stood, for he had seen two graves whose occupants were being punished, and he wanted to intercede for them as long as the branches remained fresh. We returned to the camp, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water for ablutions. There was only a drop in a waterskin. He spoke a few words, squeezed the skin, and then placed his hands in a basin, his fingers spread. I poured the water, saying “Bismillah,” and the water gushed out between his fingers until it filled the basin. Everyone was able to drink. The people complained of hunger, he invoked Allah, and we arrived at the seashore, where a large animal had washed ashore. We cooked it and ate our fill. Five of us could fit inside its eye socket, and a large camel could pass under its rib without stooping. »

Urwah ibn az-Zubayr reported from Fatimah daughter of AbuHubaysh that her blood kept flowing, so the Prophet (ﷺ) said to her: When the blood of the menses comes, it is black blood which can be recognised; so when that comes, refrain from prayer; but when a different type of blood comes, perform ablution and pray, for it is (due only to) a vein.
Abu Dawud said: Ibn al-Muthanna narrates this tradition from his book on the authority of Ibn 'Adi in a similar way. Later on he transmitted it to us from his memory: Muhammad b. 'Amr reported to us from al-Zuhri from 'Urwah on the authority of 'Aishah who said: Fatimah used to have her blood flowing. He then reported the tradition conveying the same meaning.
Abu Dawud said: Anas b. Sirin reported from Ibn 'Abbas about the woman who has a prolonged flow of blood. He said: If she sees thick blood, she should not pray; if she finds herself purified even for a moment, she should was an pray.
Makhul said: Menses are not hidden from women. Their blood is black and thick. When it (blackness and thickness) goes away and there appears yellowness and liquidness, that is the flow of blood (from vein). She should wash and pray.
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been transmitted by Sa'id b. al-Musayyab through a different chain of narrators, saying: The woman who has a prolonged flow of blood should abandon prayer when the menstruation begins; when it is finished, she should wash and pray.
Sumayy and others have also reported it from Sa'id b. al-Musayyab. This version adds: She should refrain (from prayer) during her menstrual period.
Hammad b. Salamah has reported it similarly from Yahya b. Sa'id on the authority of Sa'id b. al-Musayyab.
Abu Dawud said: Yunus has reported from Al-Hasan: When the bleeding of a menstruating woman extends (beyond the normal period), she should refrain (from prayer), after her menses are over, for one or two days. Now she becomes the woman who has a prolonged flow of blood.
Al-Taimi reported from Qatadah: If her menstrual period is prolonged by five days, she should pray. Al-Taimi said: I kept on reducing (the number of days) until I reached two days. He said: If the period extends by two days, they will be counted from the menstrual period. When Ibn Sirin was questioned about it, he said: Women have better knowledge of that.

When the Prophet (ﷺ) proceeded for the Battle of Badr, I said to him: Messenger of Allah allow me to accompany you in the battle. I shall act as a nurse for patients. It is possible that Allah might bestow martyrdom upon me. He said: Stay at your home. Allah, the Almighty , will bestow martyrdom upon you.
The narrator said: Hence she was called martyr. She read the Qur'an. She sought permission from the Prophet (ﷺ) to have a mu'adhdhin in her house. He, therefore, permitted her (to do so).
She announced that her slave and slave-girl would be free after her death. One night they went to her and strangled her with a sheet of cloth until she died, and they ran away.
Next day Umar announced among the people, "Anyone who has knowledge about them, or has seen them, should bring them (to him)."
Umar (after their arrest) ordered (to crucify them) and they were crucified. This was the first crucifixion at Medina.

My prayer and my devotion, my life and my death belong to Allah, the Lord of the Universe, Who has no partner. That is what I have been commanded, and I am first of Muslims (those who surrender themselves). O Allah, Thou art the King. There is no God but Thee. Thou art my Lord and I am Thy servant. I have wronged myself, but I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me all my sins; Thou Who alone canst forgive sins; and guide me to the best qualities. Thou Who alone canst guide to the best of them; and turn me from evil ones. Thou who alone canst turn from evil qualities. I come to serve and please Thee. All good is in Thy Hands, and evil does not pertain to Thee. I seek refuge in Thee and turn to Thee, Who art blessed and exalted. I ask Thy forgiveness and turn to thee in repentance. When he bowed, he said: O Allah, to Thee I bow, in Thee I trust, and to Thee I submit myself. My hearing, my sight, my brain, my bone and my sinews humble themselves before Thee. When he raised his head, he said: Allah listens to him who praises Him. O our lord, and all praises be to Thee in the whole of the heavens and the earth, and what is between them, and in whatever Thou creates afterwards. When he prostrated himself, he said: O Allah, to Thee I prostrate myself, to Thee I trust, and to Thee I submit myself. My face prostrated itself before Him Who created it, fashioned it, and fashioned it in the best shape, and brought forth its hearing and seeing. Blessed is Allah, the best of creators. When he saluted at the end of the prayer, he said: O Allah, forgive me my former and my latter sins, my open and secret sins, my sins in exceeding the limits, and what Thou knowest better than I. Thou art He Who puts forward and puts back. There is deity but Thee

I went out along with my father during the hajj performed by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). My father came near him; he was riding his she-camel. He stopped there and listened to him. He had a whip like the whip of the teachers. I heard the Bedouin and the people saying: Keep away from the whip. My father came up to him. He caught hold of his foot and acknowledged him (his Prophethood). He stopped and listened to him.
He then said: I participated in the army of Athran (in the pre-Islamic days).
The narrator, Ibn al-Muthanna, said: Army of Gathran. Tariq ibn al-Muraqqa' said: Who will give me a lance and get a reward?
I asked: What is its reward? He replied: I shall marry him to my first daughter born to me. So I gave him my lance and then disappeared from him till I knew that a daughter was born to him and she came of age.
I then came to him and said: Send my wife to me. He swore that he would not do that until I fixed a dower afresh other than that agreed between me and him, and I swore that I should not give him the dower other than that I had given him before.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: How old is she now?
He said: She has grown old. He said: I think you should leave her. He said: This put awe and fear into me, and I looked at the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
When he felt this in me, he said: You will not be sinful, nor will your companion be sinful.

Ibn Umar misunderstood (the Qur'anic verse, "So come to your tilth however you will")--may Allah forgive him. The fact is that this clan of the Ansar, who were idolaters, lived in the company of the Jews who were the people of the Book. They (the Ansar) accepted their superiority over themselves in respect of knowledge, and they followed most of their actions. The people of the Book (i.e. the Jews) used to have intercourse with their women on one side alone (i.e. lying on their backs). This was the most concealing position for (the vagina of) the women. This clan of the Ansar adopted this practice from them. But this tribe of the Quraysh used to uncover their women completely, and seek pleasure with them from in front and behind and laying them on their backs.
When the muhajirun (the immigrants) came to Medina, a man married a woman of the Ansar. He began to do the same kind of action with her, but she disliked it, and said to him: We were approached on one side (i.e. lying on the back); do it so, otherwise keep away from me. This matter of theirs spread widely, and it reached the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur'anic verse: "Your wives are a tilth to you, so come to your tilth however you will," i.e. from in front, from behind or lying on the back. But this verse meant the place of the delivery of the child, i.e. the vagina.

Three persons were brought to Ali (Allah be pleased with him) when he was in the Yemen. They and sexual intercourse with a woman during a single state of purity. He asked two of them: Do you acknowledge this child for this (man)? They replied: No. He then put this (question) to all of them. Whenever he asked two of them, they replied in the negative. He, therefore, cast a lot among them, and attributed the child to the one who received the lot. He imposed two-third of the blood-money (i.e. the price of the mother) on him. This was then mentioned to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he laughed so much that his molar teeth appeared.

Makhul said: I was the slave of a woman of Banu Hudhayl; afterwards she emancipated me. I did not leave Egypt until I had acquired all the knowledge that seemed to me to exist there.
I then came to al-Hijaz and I did not leave it until I had acquired all the knowledge that seemed to be available.
Then I came to al-Iraq, and I did not leave it until I had acquired all the knowledge that seemed to be available.
I then came to Syria, and besieged it. I asked everyone about giving rewards from the booty. I did not find anyone who could tell me anything about it.
I then met an old man called Ziyad ibn Jariyah at-Tamimi. I asked him: Have you heard anything about giving rewards from the booty? He replied: Yes. I heard Maslamah al-Fihri say: I was present with the Prophet (ﷺ).
He gave a quarter of the spoils on the outward journey and a third on the return journey.

That Zayd ibn Thabit said: May Allah forgive Rafi' ibn Khadij. I swear by Allah, I have more knowledge of Hadith than him. Two persons of the Ansar (according to the version of Musaddad) came to him who were disputing with each other. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: If this is your position, then do not lease the agricultural land. The version of Musaddad has: So he (Rafi' ibn Khadij) heard his statement: Do not lease agricultural lands.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent me to the Yemen as judge, and I asked: Messenger of Allah, are you sending me when I am young and have no knowledge of the duties of a judge? He replied: Allah will guide your heart and keep your tongue true. When two litigants sit in front of you, do not decide till you hear what the other has to say as you heard what the first had to say; for it is best that you should have a clear idea of the best decision. He said: I had been a judge (for long); or he said (the narrator is doubtful): I have no doubts about a decision afterwards.
