Hadith #37924
قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: أتدرون ما الغيبة؟ قال الصحابة الحاضرون: الله ورسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم أعلم. قال: الغيبة أن تقول في أخيك ما تكره سماعه في غيابه. قال أحدهم: أتظن أن ما أقوله فيه؟ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إن كان فيه ما تقول فقد اغتابته، وإن لم يكن فيه فقد كذبته. [1605]
He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Do you know what backbiting is? The Companions who were present said: Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) know best. He said: Backbiting is saying something about your brother that you dislike to hear in his absence. Someone said: Do you think that what I am saying is in him? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: If what you are saying is in him, then you have backbited him, and if it is not in him, then you have falsely accused him. [1605]
