Narrated by Ubayd Allah bin Umar al-Qawārīrī: Hammād bin Zayd narrated to us, saying: “A man used to frequent Ayyūb and listen to [hadiths] from him, then one day Ayyūb could no longer find him. [When Ayyūb inquired,] the people said: ‘O Abā Bakr, he is now frequenting Amr bin Ubayd.’ Hammād said: ‘One day, we were with Ayyūb and we went to the market early in the morning. A man came to meet Ayyūb, greeted him, inquired about him, and then Ayyūb said to him: “I heard that you are frequenting this man.” Hammād said: “[Ayyūb] identified him, that is, ‘Amr’.” [The man] said, “Yes, O Abā Bakr. Indeed, he came to us with strange things [i.e., stories].” Ayyūb said to him, “Truly, we flee… or… we fear these strange things [transmissions].”
