Hadith #45235
Yahya bin Adam told us, Sufyan told us, on the authority of Abu Ishaq, on the authority of Abu Al-Khalil, on the authority of Ali, may God be pleased with him, who said: I heard a man, He asks forgiveness for his parents while they were polytheists. So I said, “Does a man ask forgiveness for his parents while they were polytheists?” He said, “Did not Abraham ask forgiveness for his father?” So I mentioned that to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and then “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists” was revealed, to his saying. {He disowned him} He said when he died, so I do not know whether Sufyan said it or Israel said it or it is in the hadith when he died.
