حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سُئِلَ عَنْ الْوَتْرِ، أَوَاجِبٌ هُوَ قَالَ أَمَّا كَالْفَرِيضَةِ فَلَا وَلَكِنَّهَا سُنَّةٌ صَنَعَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابُهُ حَتَّى مَضَوْا عَلَى ذَلِكَ‏.‏
Abu Muawiyah told us, Al-Hajjaj told us, on the authority of Abu Ishaq, on the authority of Asim bin Damra, on the authority of Ali, may God be pleased with him, who said he was asked about the Witr prayer, Is it obligatory? He said: As for an obligation, no, but it is a Sunnah that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and his Companions followed until they departed. On that.
