حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا شَدَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا غَيْلَانُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، قَالَ قُلْنَا لِلزُّبَيْرِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَا جَاءَ بِكُمْ ضَيَّعْتُمْ الْخَلِيفَةَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ ثُمَّ جِئْتُمْ تَطْلُبُونَ بِدَمِهِ قَالَ الزُّبَيْرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ إِنَّا قَرَأْنَاهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ {وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً لَا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْكُمْ خَاصَّةً} لَمْ نَكُنْ نَحْسَبُ أَنَّا أَهْلُهَا حَتَّى وَقَعَتْ مِنَّا حَيْثُ وَقَعَتْ.
Abu Sa`id, the client of Banu Hashim, narrated to us. Shaddad, meaning Ibn Sa`id, narrated to us. Ghaylan bin Jarir narrated to us, on the authority of Mutarrif, he said to Al-Zubayr. May God be pleased with him, O Abu Abdullah, what has brought you, you have destroyed the Caliph until he was killed, then you came asking for his blood. Al-Zubair, may God be pleased with him, said By God, on his authority, we recited it at the time of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and Abu Bakr, Omar, and Uthman, may God be pleased with them {And fear A trial that will not strike especially those of you who have wronged. {We did not think that we were the people of it until it fell from among us wherever it fell.}
