Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #49508

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Indeed, a servant committed a sin and said: My Lord, I have sinned.” So forgive him, and his Lord said: Does my servant know that he has a Lord who forgives sins and takes responsibility for them? Did I forgive my servant? Then he remained as long as God wished, then he sinned. He committed a sin, and he said: My Lord, I have committed a sin, so forgive it. Then his Lord said: Does my servant know that he has a Lord who forgives sins and takes responsibility for them? I forgave my servant, then he stayed as long as God willed, then he committed a sin. He said: My Lord, I have committed another sin, so forgive me. He said: Know my servant that he has a Lord who forgives sins. And he takes it? I have forgiven my servant, so let him do whatever he wants.”
