Sahih Muslim # 1/1
Know! May Allah grant you success. Whoever has the ability to distinguish between authentic and weak hadiths and knows the trustworthy and the accused narrators (those who have been accused of lying, etc.), it is obligatory upon him not to narrate except that hadith whose origin is sound and whose narrators are those whose faults have not been exposed, and to avoid the narrations of those who have been accused or who are stubborn among the people of innovation. And the evidence for what we have said is that Allah, the Exalted, said: “O you who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with news, verify it, lest you go against a people in ignorance, then tomorrow regret what you have done.” Secondly, Allah Almighty said: “And call to witness two men or a man and two women of your choice” (for testimony, meaning those who are known to be truthful and good) and He said: “Allah Almighty called to witness two just persons.” So it is clear from these verses that the statement of the transgressor is unreliable, and similarly it is clear from the Hadith Sharif that it is not correct to narrate a narration that is false (which has the possibility of being false), as is clear from the Quran, and that Hadith is the same as the one that is famously narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: “Whoever narrates a Hadith from me and thinks that it is false, then he is a liar.” Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated with his chain of transmission from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: (i.e. the same Hadith that has been narrated above that whoever narrates a Hadith from me and thinks that it is false, then he is a liar).

Zuhair ibn Harb narrated to me, saying: Jarir narrated to us, on the authority of 'Umarah (who was Ibn al-Qa'qa'), on the authority of Abu Zur'ah, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Ask me." But they were too afraid to ask him. Then a man came and sat at his knees. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He said, "It is to associate nothing with Allah, to establish prayer, and to pay zakat." And he fasts Ramadan.” He said, “You have spoken the truth.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is faith?” He said, “It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Book, the meeting with Him, His messengers, to believe in the Resurrection, and to believe in predestination in its entirety.” He said, “You have spoken the truth.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is excellence?” He said, “It is to fear Allah as if you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, He surely sees you.” He said, "You have spoken the truth." He said, "O Messenger of God, when will the Hour come?" He said, "The one questioned about it knows no more than the one asking. I will tell you about its signs: When you see a woman giving birth to her master, that is one of its signs. When you see barefoot, naked, deaf, and mute people becoming the kings of the earth, that is one of its signs. And when you see shepherds of sheep competing in..." The building, that is one of its signs, in five of the unseen things which none knows except God.” Then he recited: {Indeed, God [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, God is Knowing and Acquainted.} He said, then the man stood up, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: Bring him back to me. So they searched for him but did not find him. Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “This was Gabriel. He wanted you to learn since you did not ask.”

Muhammad bin Muthani, Abdur Rahman, Sufyan, Abu Ishaq, Abu Al-Ahwas narrated from Abdullah (bin Masood, may Allah be pleased with him), who said: It is enough for a person to lie that he narrates everything he hears.

Narrated by Sufyan bin Husayn: Iyas bin Mu'awiyah asked me, "I see that you love knowledge of the Quran. So recite a surah for me and explain it so that I may reflect on what you know." I did as he asked, then he said to me, "Remember well what I am about to tell you: beware of reprehensible things in the hadiths, for few are those who transmit them without debasing themselves, and their hadiths are then rejected."

Sahih Muslim # 1/13
It is narrated from Sufyan bin Husayn that Iyas bin Muawiyah called me and said, "I see you are very keen on the knowledge of the Quran. Recite a Surah in front of me and explain its meaning so that I too may see what you know." He said, "I did so, and he said to me, 'Remember always what I have told you from me.'"

Abu Tahir, Harmalah bin Yahya, Ibn Wahb, Yunus, Ibn Shihab, Ubaidullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah, Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You do not narrate to a people a hadith that their intellects cannot grasp, but it becomes a cause of tribulation for some of them.

Abu Saeed Ashj, Waqi', 'A'mash, Musayyib bin Rafi', 'Amir bin Abduh narrated that: Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The devil takes the form of a man, then comes to the people and tells them a false hadith, then they scatter. A man among them says: I heard (a hadith) from a man, I recognize his face but I do not know his name, he was narrating a hadith.

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): “Busayr bin Ka’b came to Ibn Abbas and began to relate hadiths to him. Ibn Abbas said to him, ‘Go back to such-and-such hadith.’ Bushayr went back and related it. Then Ibn Abbas said to him again, ‘Go back to such-and-such hadith.’ Bushayr went back again and related it. Then Bushayr said to him, ‘I don’t know if you know all my hadiths and reject this one and that one, or if you reject all my hadiths and only know this one and that one?’” Ibn Abbas replied, “We used to receive hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at a time when no one lied about him. But when people started mixing dubious and authentic narrations, we stopped listening to their hadiths.”

Sahih Muslim # 1/19
Muhammad ibn Abbad and Sa'id ibn Amr al-Ash'asi narrated to me together from Ibn Uyeina. Sa'id said: Sufyan reported to us from Hisham ibn Hujayr, who reported from Tawus. Tawus, referring to Bushayr ibn Ka'b, said: "This man came to Ibn Abbas and began to narrate hadith to him. Ibn Abbas then said to him: 'Repeat such and such hadith!' And he repeated it. Then he narrated hadith to him again. Ibn Abbas again said: 'Repeat such and such hadith!' And he repeated it. This time he addressed Ibn Abbas: 'I don't know; did you know all my hadiths except this one?'" "Or did you not know all my hadiths, and only recognize this one?" he asked. Abbas replied, "We used to narrate hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when no lies were fabricated about him. But when people began to ride both unruly and docile camels (meaning when people began to engage in any profession, good or bad), we stopped narrating hadiths from him."

Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, on the authority of 'Uqayl, on the authority of al-Zuhri, who said: 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Utbah ibn Mas'ud informed me, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and Abu Bakr succeeded him, and some of the Arabs disbelieved, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said to Abu Bakr: "How can you fight the people when they have..." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I have been commanded to fight the people until they say, ‘There is no god but Allah.’ Whoever says, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ has protected his life and property from me, except for what is due from him, and his reckoning is with Allah.” Abu Bakr said, “By Allah, I will fight whoever differentiates between prayer and zakat, for zakat is the right of wealth. By Allah, if they withheld from me even a camel’s tether that they used to pay to the Messenger of Allah…” By God, may God bless him and grant him peace, I would have fought them to prevent him. Then Umar ibn al-Khattab said: By God, it was only when I saw that God Almighty had opened Abu Bakr’s heart to fighting that I knew it was the truth.

(Abu Ayyub Sulayman ibn Ubaydillah al-Ghaylani narrated to me:) Abu Amir, that is, al-Aqadi, narrated to us:) Rabah narrated to us from Qays ibn Sa'd, who narrated from Mujahid. Mujahid said: Busheyr al-Adawi came to Ibn Abbas and began narrating hadith, saying: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said..." Ibn Abbas did not listen to his narration; he did not look at him. Thereupon Busheyr said: "Ibn Abbas! Why do I not see you paying attention to my hadith?" "I am reciting to you a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), yet you are not listening?" he said. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "There was a time when, when we heard someone say, 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said...', our eyes would immediately turn to him and our ears would be attentive to him. But when people began to paint themselves with all sorts of colors, we no longer accept anything from them except what we recognize."

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Malikah that he said: I wrote to Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) and requested him to write a book for me and to conceal from me (those matters that are authentic or not to be written). He said: The boy is seeking pure Hadiths, I will choose (the authentic) for him in all matters (related to Hadith) and remove (the subject and fabricated Hadiths) (he said: He called for the rulings of Hazrat Ali (RA) and started writing things from them and (it happened) that when something happened, he would say: By Allah! Hazrat Ali (RA) did not make this ruling, unless (God forbid) he went astray (which did not happen.)

It was narrated from Umar and Naqid, Sufyan bin Uyaynah, Hisham bin Hujair, and Tawus that he said: A book was brought to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the rulings of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) were written, so he left this much and erased the rest, and Sufyan bin Uyaynah pointed to a hand’s length.

Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us that Isma'il ibn Zakariyya narrated to us from Asim al-Ahwal, who narrated from Ibn Sirin. Ibn Sirin said: They used to not ask about the chain of narrators. When the fitna (strife/discord) arose, they began to say: Tell us the names of your narrators. Now, attention is paid to the Ahl as-Sunnah, and their hadiths are accepted; attention is paid to the Ahl as-Bid'ah, and their hadiths are not accepted.

Zuhair ibn Harb told me, Umar ibn Yunus al-Hanafi told us, Ikrimah ibn Ammar told us, Abu Kathir told me, Abu Hurayrah told me, we were sitting around the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr and Umar were with us, along with a group of people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up from among us and was gone for a while, and we feared that he would be killed before we could finish. We were terrified, so we got up. I was the first to be terrified, so I went out seeking the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until I came to a wall belonging to the Ansar, specifically to Banu Najjar. I walked around it, looking for a door, but I couldn't find one. Then I saw a stream entering the wall from an outside well—and the stream was called a "rabi'"—so I scrambled like a fox and entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said, Abu Hurayrah said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “What is the matter with you?” I said, “You were among us, then you got up and were late in coming back to us, so we feared that you might be cut off before we could reach you, so we were terrified, and I was the first to be terrified, so I came to this wall and crouched down like a fox, and these people were behind me.” He said, “O Abu Hurayrah.” He gave me his sandals and said, "Take these sandals of mine, and whoever you meet beyond this wall who testifies that there is no god but Allah, with certainty in his heart, give him the good news of Paradise." The first person I met was Umar, who said, "What are these sandals, Abu Hurayrah?" I said, "These are the sandals of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He sent me with them to give to whomever I meet who testifies that there is no god but Allah." I gave him glad tidings of Paradise, for he believed in God with certainty in his heart. Then Umar struck me between my breasts, and I fell on my backside. He said, "Go back, Abu Hurayrah!" So I returned to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and I burst into tears. Umar mounted me, and he was right behind me. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, "What is the matter with you, Abu Hurayrah?" I said, "I met Umar and told him..." By the One with whom You sent me, he struck me between my breasts, and I fell on my backside. He said, "Go back." The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "O Umar, what made you do what you did?" He said, "O Messenger of God, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, did you send Abu Hurayrah with your sandals, telling him to give glad tidings of Paradise to whomever he met who testified that there is no god but God, with certainty in his heart?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then do not do it, for I fear that people will rely on it, so let them work." The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, "Then let them."

The Prophet said, "O Mu'adh!" Mu'adh replied, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, and may you be happy." The Prophet said, "O Mu'adh!" Mu'adh replied, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, and may you be happy." The Prophet said, "O Mu'adh!" He replied, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, and at your pleasure." He said, "There is no servant who testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, except that Allah will forbid him from the Fire." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, should I not inform the people of this so that they may rejoice?" He said, "Then they will rely on it." So Mu'adh informed them of it at the time of his death, fearing sin.

Abu Nadr Hashim bin Qasim narrated a hadith, saying: We heard Abu Aqeel (Yahya bin Mutawakkil), the master of Bahiya, narrate a hadith, saying: I was sitting with Qasim bin Ubaidullah (bin Abdullah bin Umar whose mother was Umm Abdullah bint Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abi Bakr) and Yahya bin Saeed when Yahya said to Qasim bin Ubaidullah: Mr. Abu Muhammad! This is a great fault for a person like you, it is a great matter that you are asked about a matter of this religion and you have no knowledge or solution or (say these words) no knowledge or way out regarding it. So Qasim said to him: For what reason? (Yahya) said: Because you are the son of the two Imams of guidance, Abu Bakr and Umar. He said: Qasim said to him: "For a person who has been given intelligence from Allah, it is worse for me to say something without knowledge or to narrate from someone who is not trustworthy." (On hearing this, Yahya) remained silent and did not answer him.

Bishr bin Hakam Abdi narrated to me, saying: I heard Sufyan bin Uyaina say: Many people narrated to me from Abu Aqil, the ruler of Bahiya, that (some) people asked a son of Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about something about which he had no knowledge. Yahya bin Saeed said to him: I consider it a great matter that a person like you (while you are the son of the Imams of Guidance, namely Umar and Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) should be asked about something (and) you have no knowledge about it. He said: By Allah! In the sight of Allah and in the sight of the one to whom Allah has given intelligence, it is greater than that I should say something without knowledge or narrate from someone who is not trustworthy. (Sufyan) said: Abu Aqil Yahya bin Mutawakkil (may Allah be pleased with him) (also) were present with him when he said this.

Amr ibn Ali Abu Hafs also narrated to us that: "I heard Yahya ibn Sa'id saying: I asked Sufyan al-Thawri, Shu'ba, Malik, and Ibn Uyayna: What should I do if someone is not trustworthy in hadith and someone asks me about him? They said: 'Inform him that he is not trustworthy!'"

Al-Nadr said: Ibn Aun was asked about the hadith of Shahr (Bin Hawshab), he was standing at his doorstep, he said: They (the hadith scholars) have indeed cursed the city, they have cursed the city. Imam Muslim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The tongues of the people targeted them, they talked about them.

Narrated by Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Quhzādh: Ali bin Husayn bin Wāqid informed me that Abd Allah bin al-Mubārak said: “I said to Sufyān ath-Thawrī: ‘Indeed, Abbad bin Kathīr, whose situation you know, when he narrated…’” He said: “When I was in a gathering and Abbad was mentioned, I would praise him for his religion but I would say: ‘Do not take any hadith from him.’” Muhammad said: Abd Allah bin Uthmān narrated to us, he said, my father said, Abd Allah bin al-Mubārak said: “I found myself in a gathering of Shu’bah, and he said: ‘Here is Abbad bin Kathīr, so beware of him.’”

Abdullah bin Mubarak said: I said to Sufyan al-Thawri: Surely, Ibad bin Kathir is someone whose condition you know. When he narrates a hadith, he talks big, do you think I should tell people: Do not take (hadith) from him? Sufyan would say: Why not! Abdullah said: Then it became (my habit) that whenever I was in a (scientific) gathering where Ibad was mentioned, I would praise him regarding religion and (also) say: Do not take (hadith) from him. Muhammad narrated to us, he said: Abdullah bin Uthman narrated to us, he said: My father said: Abdullah bin Mubarak said: I reached Shu'bah, so he (also) said: This is Ibad bin Kathir, so be careful (in narrating hadith) from him.

Muhammad bin Abdullah Qahzad narrated to me a hadith, he said: I heard Abdullah bin Uthman bin Jablah, he was saying: I said to Abdullah bin Mubarak: Who is this from whom you narrated the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr: “The day of Eid al-Fitr is the day of gifts.” He said: Sulayman bin Hajjaj, look carefully at the hadiths that you have with you (or the hadiths that I have given you). Ibn Qahzad said: I heard Wahb bin Zam’ah narrating from Sufyan bin Abdul Malik, he said: Abdullah, meaning Ibn Mubarak, said: I saw Ruh bin Ghatif, the narrator of the hadith with blood equal to one dirham. I sat with him in a gathering, and I was ashamed of my companions for seeing me sitting with him despite my dislike for narrating hadith to him, because of his dislike of hadith and the lack of acceptance of his narration.

Ibn Qahzad said, I heard Wahb narrate from Sufyan, and he narrated from Abdullah ibn Mubarak, who said: The rest are truthful in speech, but they take hadith from every comer (everyone who is skilled in hadith and not).

Al-Hajjaj bin Sha’ar, Ahmad bin Yunus, narrated from Ibrahim Nakha’i that Al-Harith (the blind) said: I learned the Quran in three years and the revelation in two years (or said: Revelation in three years and the Quran in two years). In the dictionary, revelation has many meanings, for example: pointing, writing, inspiration and secret speech, etc., but in Islamic terminology, revelation means sending a word, message, etc. to His Messenger in one of the ways prescribed by Allah. This statement of Al-Harith shows his ignorance in the matter of Islamic terminology.
