حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ، حَدَّثَنِي شُرَيْحٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُبَيْدٍ، قَالَ ذُكِرَ أَهْلُ الشَّامِ عِنْدَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ بِالْعِرَاقِ فَقَالُوا الْعَنْهُمْ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَالَ لَا إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الْأَبْدَالُ يَكُونُونَ بِالشَّامِ وَهُمْ أَرْبَعُونَ رَجُلًا كُلَّمَا مَاتَ رَجُلٌ أَبْدَلَ اللَّهُ مَكَانَهُ رَجُلًا يُسْقَى بِهِمْ الْغَيْثُ وَيُنْتَصَرُ بِهِمْ عَلَى الْأَعْدَاءِ وَيُصْرَفُ عَنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ بِهِمْ الْعَذَابُ.
Abu Al-Mughirah told us, Safwan told us, Shurayh, meaning Ibn Ubaid, told me, he said the people of the Levant were mentioned in the presence of Ali bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him. On his authority while he was in Iraq. They said, “Curse them, O Commander of the Faithful.” He said, “No, I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace.” He says that the Abdal will be in the Levant, and they are forty men. Whenever a man dies, God replaces him with a man through whom rain will be given water and victory will be given. against the enemies, and the torment will be turned away from the people of the Levant.
