حَدَّثَنَا غَسَّانُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ، قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَنَحْنُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ عَنْ الْوَتْرِ فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنَّا فِي رَكْعَةٍ شَفَعَ إِلَيْهَا أُخْرَى حَتَّى اجْتَمَعْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُوتِرُ فِي أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ فِي وَسَطِهِ ثُمَّ أَثْبَتَ الْوَتْرَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّاعَةِ قَالَ وَذَلِكَ عِنْدَ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ.
Ghassan bin Al-Rabi’ narrated to us, Abu Israel narrated to us, on the authority of Al-Suddi, on the authority of Abd Khair, who said: Ali bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, came out against us. On his authority, while we were in the mosque, he said, “Where is the one who asked for the Witr prayer?” Whoever among us was in a rak’ah, interceded for another rak’ah until we gathered for him. He said that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to perform the Witr prayer at the beginning of the night, then he performed the Witr prayer in the middle of it, then he fixed the Witr prayer at this hour. He said: That was when dawn broke
