On the authority of Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, came to Medina and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura, so the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to them: May God bless him and grant him peace: “What is this day on which you are fasting?” They said: This is a great day: God saved Moses and his people on it. And Pharaoh and his people drowned, so Moses fasted in thanksgiving, as we fast the same way. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “We are more deserving and deserving of Moses.” of you.” So the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, fasted and ordered his fasting.
