Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #50920

On the authority of Abu Qatada that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, stood up among them and mentioned to them that jihad in the path of God and belief in God is better. Then a man stood up and said: O Messenger of God, do you think that if I were killed in the name of God, my sins would be expiated? Then the Messenger of God said to him May God’s prayers and peace be upon him: “Yes, if you are killed in the cause of God and you are patient and seeking reward, advancing and not retreating.” Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “How did you say?” He said: Have you thought that if I were killed in the name of God, would my sins be forgiven? Then the Messenger of God said, may God bless him and grant him peace May God bless him and grant him peace: “Yes, and you are patient and seeking reward, and do not turn away except from debt, for Gabriel said that to me.” Narrated by Muslim
