Sahih Muslim — Hadith #9211
Hadith #9211
(Hasan al-Hulwani also narrated to us:) Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us:) Hammad ibn Zayd reported to us from Ayyub from Amr ibn Dinar from Ata ibn Yasar from Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a similar hadith. He said, "Then I met Amr, and he narrated this hadith to me, but he did not reject it." This hadith is evidence that intending to perform a voluntary prayer after the iqamah for the obligatory prayer is forbidden. In this regard, there is no difference between the Sunnah prayers of the five daily prayers and other voluntary prayers, which are called "Rawatib." This is the view of the majority of scholars and the Shafi'i school of thought. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to beat those who performed the Sunnah prayers after the Iqamah. According to one narration, if someone who has not performed the Sunnah prayer of the morning prayer believes they will catch the second rak'ah of the obligatory prayer, they should perform the Sunnah prayer first after the Iqamah. According to another narration from Imam Malik, if someone who has not performed the Sunnah prayer of the morning prayer believes they will catch the first rak'ah of the obligatory prayer, they should perform the Sunnah prayer outside the mosque. According to yet another narration, Imam Malik agrees with Shafi'i on this matter. According to Thawri, if someone believes they will catch the first rak'ah of the obligatory prayer... If he is of sound mind, he performs the Sunnah prayer after the Iqamah. Some have said that the Sunnah prayer should be performed outside the mosque, and that one cannot pray inside the mosque after the Iqamah. The statement of one of its narrators, Hammad, "Then I met Amr, and he narrated this hadith to me, but he did not raise it," does not invalidate the authenticity or Marfu' status of the hadith. Because most of the narrators have reported it as Marfu'. "The Marfu' version of this hadith is more authentic." He said: As we saw at the beginning, a narration of a hadith that is marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) is preferred over a narration that is mawquf (attributed to a halter), even if the number of narrators who transmitted it as marfu' is smaller. This is the correct school of thought. However, in the hadith of Hammad, the number of narrators who transmitted it as marfu' is greater. Therefore, the acceptance of the marfu' narration remains preferable. The meaning of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) statement: "Once the iqamah is called, there is no prayer other than the obligatory prayer," is that the prayer has no perfection, that is, no reward. Otherwise, the prayer performed is valid, because he did not command the making up of such a prayer.
