Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #44583

Muhammad ibn Ja`far narrated to us, he said, Shu`bah narrated to us, on the authority of Al-Hakam, on the authority of Abu Wa’il, that Al-Subbi ibn Ma’bad was a Christian, Arab Taghlib, So he converted to Islam and asked which work is best, and he was told: “Jihad for the sake of God Almighty.” So he wanted to do Jihad, so he was told: “You have performed Hajj.” So he said, No, so he was told to perform Hajj and Umrah, then he strove and set off until, when he was with the guards, he greeted them all, and Zayd bin Suhan and Salman bin saw him. Rabia, so they said to him, “He is more misguided than his camel, or better guided than his she-camel.” So he went to Omar, may God be pleased with him, and informed him of their saying. He said, “I am guided by the Sunnah of your Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace.” Al-Hakam said, “I said to Abu Wael, ‘The boy told you,’ and he said, ‘Yes.’”
