Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #45534

Waki` narrated to us, on the authority of Sufyan, H., and Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, he said, Sufyan narrated to us, on the authority of Abu Ishaq, on the authority of Abu al-Khalil, on the authority of Ali, may God be pleased with him. God said on his authority, “I heard a man asking forgiveness for his parents while they were polytheists.” So I said, “Are you asking forgiveness for your parents while they were polytheists?” He said, “Isn’t it Abraham asked forgiveness for his father while he was a polytheist. He said, “I mentioned that to the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him,” and then “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe” was revealed. They ask forgiveness for the polytheists} until the last two verses. Abdul-Rahman said, so God revealed {And Abraham’s seeking forgiveness was not To his father, except for a promise he made to him.
