Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #50739

On the authority of Abu Umayyah Al-Makhzoumi: The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, brought a thief who had confessed, but no belongings were found with him, so the Messenger of God said to him: May God’s prayers and peace be upon him: “I do not think you have stolen.” He said: Yes, so he repeated it two or three times, all of which he recognized. So he ordered it to be cut and brought, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to him: “Ask forgiveness from God and repent to Him.” So he said: I ask forgiveness from God and repent. To him, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Oh God, forgive him” three times. Narrated by Abu Dawud, Al-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah And Al-Darimi: This is what I found in the Four Principles, the Collection of Principles, the Branches of Faith, and the Signs of the Sunnahs, on the authority of Abu Umayyah.
