Hadith #37897
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who bribes and the one who accepts a bribe in judgment.” This was narrated by the five compilers of Hadith, and At-Tirmidhi graded it as good (hasan), and Ibn Hibban graded it as authentic (sahih).1 This version is weak with this wording. It was narrated by At-Tirmidhi (1336), Ahmad (2/387-388), and Ibn Hibban (1196) through the chain of transmission of Umar ibn Abi Salamah, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah. At-Tirmidhi said: “The hadith of Abu Hurayrah is a good and authentic hadith. This hadith was also narrated by Abu Salamah ibn Abdur-Rahman, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Amr, on the authority of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).” Peace and blessings be upon him. It was narrated on the authority of Abu Salamah, on the authority of his father, on the authority of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but it is not authentic. He said: I heard Abdullah ibn Abdur-Rahman—that is, Ad-Darimi—say: “The hadith of Abu Salamah, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Amr, on the authority of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is the best and most authentic hadith on this topic.” I said: The reason for its weakness is Umar ibn Abi Salamah, as he is criticized for his memory, firstly. Secondly, the scholar, may God have mercy on him, erred in attributing it, as it was not narrated by any of the compilers of the Sunan except At-Tirmidhi. As for the hadith of Ibn Amr, it follows.
