حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ يَعْنِي الْفَرَّاءَ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ يُثَيْعٍ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَنْ يُؤَمَّرُ بَعْدَكَ قَالَ إِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَجِدُوهُ أَمِينًا زَاهِدًا فِي الدُّنْيَا رَاغِبًا فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَإِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَجِدُوهُ قَوِيًّا أَمِينًا لَا يَخَافُ فِي اللَّهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ وَإِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَلَا أُرَاكُمْ فَاعِلِينَ تَجِدُوهُ هَادِيًا مَهْدِيًّا يَأْخُذُ بِكُمْ الطَّرِيقَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ.
Aswad bin Amir told us, Abd al-Hamid bin Abi Jaafar told me, meaning Al-Farra, on the authority of Israel, on the authority of Abu Ishaq, on the authority of Zaid bin Yatha’i, on the authority of Ali, may God be pleased with him. It was said, O Messenger of God, who will be appointed after you? He said, “If you appoint Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, you will find him.” Faithful and ascetic in this world and desiring the Hereafter. And if you conspire with Omar, may God be pleased with him, you will find him strong and trustworthy, not afraid in God of the blame of a blameworthy person, even if You conspired against Ali, may God be pleased with him, and I do not see you doing so. You will find him a guide, a Mahdi who will take you to the straight path.
