Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #44648

Yahya bin Ishaq told us, Ibn Lahi’ah told us, on the authority of Ata’ bin Dinar, on the authority of Abu Yazid Al-Khawlani, he said: I heard Fadalah bin Ubaid, saying: I heard Omar bin Al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, saying: I heard the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, saying: “The martyrs are four.” A believing man with good faith met the enemy and believed God, and was killed. He is the one whom the people looked at in this way, and he raised his head until it fell. The hood of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, or the hood of Omar, and the second is a believing man who met the enemy and it was as if he were striking his back. With an acacia thorn, a strange arrow came to him and killed him. He was in the second and third degree, a believing man who mixed a good deed with an evil one and met the enemy. So he spoke the truth to God Almighty until he was killed. He said, “This is in the third and fourth degree, a believing man who was extravagant with himself.” He encountered the enemy many times, and he believed God until he was killed, and that was in the fourth degree.
