Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #45514

Waki` narrated to us, Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us, on the authority of Simak bin Harb, on the authority of Hanash al-Kinani, that some people in Yemen dug a cage for a lion. So he fell into it, and the people gathered together against him, then one man fell into it and clung to another, then another clung to another, until there were four of them in it, and he disputed over the matter. ذَلِكَ حَتَّى أَخَذَ السِّلَاحَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَتَقْتُلُونَ مِائَتَيْنِ فِي أَرْبَعَةٍ وَلَكِنْ سَأَقْضِي بَيْنَكُمْ With a settlement, if you are satisfied with it, for the first one is a quarter of the blood money, for the second is a third of the blood money, for the third is half of the blood money, and for the fourth is the blood money, but they were not satisfied. With his decree, they came to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and he said, “I will make a decree among you.” He said, “So he was informed of Ali’s decree, may God be pleased with him, and he authorized it.”
