حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَبُعٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ لَتُخْضَبَنَّ هَذِهِ مِنْ هَذَا فَمَا يَنْتَظِرُ بِي الْأَشْقَى قَالُوا يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَأَخْبِرْنَا بِهِ نُبِيرُ عِتْرَتَهُ قَالَ إِذًا تَالَلَّهِ تَقْتُلُونَ بِي غَيْرَ قَاتِلِي قَالُوا فَاسْتَخْلِفْ عَلَيْنَا قَالَ لَا وَلَكِنْ أَتْرُكُكُمْ إِلَى مَا تَرَكَكُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالُوا فَمَا تَقُولُ لِرَبِّكَ إِذَا أَتَيْتَهُ وَقَالَ وَكِيعٌ مَرَّةً إِذَا لَقِيتَهُ قَالَ أَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ تَرَكْتَنِي فِيهِمْ مَا بَدَا لَكَ ثُمَّ قَبَضْتَنِي إِلَيْكَ وَأَنْتَ فِيهِمْ فَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَصْلَحْتَهُمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَفْسَدْتَهُمْ.
Waki` narrated to us, Al-Amash narrated to us, on the authority of Salim bin Abi al-Ja`d, on the authority of Abdullah bin Sab`, he said: I heard Ali, may God be pleased with him, say Let these be mixed with this, for what awaits the most wretched of me? They said: O Commander of the Faithful, inform us of it. Nabeer of his family said: Then, by God You kill for me other than me. They said: Then he made a succession over us. He said: No, but I will leave you to what the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, left you to. They said: So what will you say to your Lord when you come to Him? And Waki’ once said, “When you meet Him,” he said, “I say, ‘O God, you have left me among them as much as you wish.’ Then You took me to you while you were among them. If you wish, you can reform them, and if you wish, you can corrupt them.
