Khalaf ibn al-Walid narrated to us, Israel narrated to us, on the authority of Abu Ishaq, on the authority of Abu Maysara, on the authority of Omar ibn al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, he said when it was revealed Prohibiting alcohol. He said, “O God, give us a satisfactory explanation regarding alcohol.” Then this verse was revealed that is in Surah Al-Baqarah. {They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In them is a great sin.} He said, So Omar, may God be pleased with him, was called and it was read to him, and he said, O God, make clear. We have a satisfactory explanation regarding wine, so the verse was revealed in Surat An-Nisa: {O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are Drunken.} When the caller of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to call for prayer, he would call not to approach prayer while drunk, so he called Omar, may God be pleased with him. On his authority, it was read to him, and he said, “O God, give us a satisfactory explanation regarding wine.” Then the verse that was on the table was revealed, and he was called. Omar, may God be pleased with him, and it was recited to him. When he reached, {So are you finished?} He said, and Omar, may God be pleased with him, said: We have finished, we have finished.
