Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #45617

Muhammad ibn Ja`far narrated to us, Shu`bah narrated to us, on the authority of Abd al-Malik ibn Maysarah, on the authority of al-Nazzal ibn Sabra, that he bore witness to Ali, may God be pleased with him. On his behalf, he prayed the noon prayer, then he sat in the spacious hall attending to the needs of the people. When the afternoon prayer came, a well was brought and he took a handful of water and wiped his hands. And his arms, face, head, and feet. Then he drank what was left of it while standing, then he said, “Some people hate to drink while standing.” The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, did as I did, and this is the ablution of one who does not do it. Affan told us, Shu`bah told us, Abd told us Al-Malik ibn Maysarah said: I heard al-Nazzal ibn Sabra said: I heard Ali, may God be pleased with him, so he mentioned its meaning except that he said a cup was brought.
