Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #49064

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him, that the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “A man said: ‘I will give charity.’ Then he came out with his charity.” So he put it in the hand of a thief, and they started talking about whether you would give alms to a thief, and he said, O God, praise be to you for a thief. Would you give alms to me with charity? So he went out with his zakat and put it in the hands of an adulteress. They were talking about the night in charity for an adulteress, and he said, O God, praise be to you for an adulteress. Don't you give charity? So he went out with his charity and put it in the hands of a rich man. They started talking about giving charity to a rich man. He said: Oh God, praise be to you for a thief and for An adulteress and a rich man. Then he was brought and it was said to him: Have you not given your charity to a thief? Perhaps he will refrain from stealing from him. As for the adulteress, perhaps she will refrain from stealing. Her fornication, but as for the rich man, perhaps he will consider it and spend from what God has given him.” Agreed upon, and its wording is by Al-Bukhari.
