Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #50451

On the authority of Ibn Abbas: Hilal bin Umayyah slandered his wife in the presence of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, with Shurek bin Sahma, and the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: He said: “Evidence or a limit in your back” and said: O Messenger of God, if one of us sees a man with his wife, he should go Seeking evidence? Then the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, began to say: “Evidence, otherwise there is a punishment against you.” Then Hilal said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I am telling the truth. So let God send down what will free my back from the punishment. Then Gabriel came down and revealed to him: (And those who accuse their wives) so he recited. Until he reached the news (if he was of the truthful ones), then Hilal came and testified, and the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Indeed, God knows that one of you is a liar, so does he “Which of you is repentant?” Then she stood up and testified, and when it was five o’clock they stopped her and said: It is obligatory. Ibn Abbas said: So she delayed and retreated until we thought she would return, then she said: I will not expose my people all day long. So she went on and the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Look at it, and if it brings it with kohl-colored eyes, darkening of the buttocks and tingling of the legs, then it belongs to Sharik ibn Sahma’.” So she brought it. Likewise, the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “If it had not been for what was mentioned in the Book of God, it would have been a matter for me and her.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari
