عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ سَأَلْنَا عَبْدَ اللهِ عَنْ هَذِهِ الآيَةِ (وَلاَ تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِى سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ) قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّا قَدْ سَأَلْنَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ أَرْوَاحُهُمْ فِى جَوْفِ طَيْرٍ خُضْرٍ لَهَا قَنَادِيلُ مُعَلَّقَةٌ بِالْعَرْشِ تَسْرَحُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ شَاءَتْ ثُمَّ تَأْوِى إِلَى تِلْكَ الْقَنَادِيلِ فَاطَّلَعَ إِلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمُ اطِّلاَعَةً فَقَالَ هَلْ تَشْتَهُونَ شَيْئًا قَالُوا أَىَّ شَىْءٍ نَشْتَهِى وَنَحْنُ نَسْرَحُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ شِئْنَا فَفَعَلَ ذَلِكَ بِهِمْ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا أَنَّهُمْ لَنْ يُتْرَكُوا مِنْ أَنْ يُسْأَلُوا قَالُوا يَا رَبِّ نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَرُدَّ أَرْوَاحَنَا فِى أَجْسَادِنَا حَتَّى نُقْتَلَ فِى سَبِيلِكَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فَلَمَّا رَأَى أَنْ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ حَاجَةٌ تُرِكُوا

On the authority of Masruq, he said: We asked Abdullah about this verse (And do not think that those who were killed in the cause of God are dead, but rather alive in the sight of their Lord. They will be provided.” He said, “Indeed, we have asked about that.” He said, “Their souls are in the belly of green birds that have lanterns attached to the throne. They are released from Paradise wherever it wished. Then it took refuge in those lanterns. Then their Lord looked at them looking forward and said, “Do you desire anything?” They said, “What thing do we desire?” while we We will leave Paradise wherever we wish. So He did that to them three times, and when they saw that they would not be spared from being asked, they said, “Oh! Lord, we want our souls to be returned to our bodies so that we may be killed in Your cause once again. When they saw that they had no need, they were left behind.
