Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #45093

Ismail told us, on the authority of Sa`id ibn Abi Arouba, on the authority of Abdullah al-Danaj, on the authority of Hudayn Abi Sasan al-Raqqashi, that people from the people of Kufa came to Othman, may God be pleased with him, and they informed him of what had happened with the newborn, that is, his drinking alcohol, so Ali spoke to him about it and said Below you is your cousin, so carry out the punishment on him. He said, “O Hassan, get up and flog him.” He said, “You are not of this kind, nor is anyone else like this.” He said, “Rather, you are weak.” You have become weak and unable. Arise, O Abdullah bin Jaafar. Abdullah began to beat him and attack Ali until he reached forty, then he said, “Hold back,” or he said, “Hold back.” The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, was flogged for forty and Abu Bakr for forty, and he completed it by the age of eighty and every year.
