Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #45094

Ismail told us, Muhammad bin Ishaq told us, Muhammad bin Talha bin Yazid bin Rukana told me, on the authority of Ubayd Allah Al-Khawlani, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him, said, “Ali entered my house and called for ablution, and I brought him a cup that takes the mudd, or something close to it, until it is placed.” In his hands, he had urinated, and he said, “O Ibn Abbas, shall I perform ablution for you as the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, performed the ablution?” I said, “Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you.” He said So a vessel was placed for him, and he washed his hands, then rinsed his mouth, inhaled and exhaled, then he took his hands and rubbed his face with them, and jabbed his thumb. What came before his ears, he said, then he repeated the same thing three times, then he took a handful of water with his right hand and emptied it on his forelock, then He sent it running down his face, then washed his right hand up to the elbow three times, then his other hand like that, then wiped his head and ears.
