Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #48340

On the authority of Amr bin Salamah, he said: We were at the waters of the people’s passage, and riders were passing by us, asking them: What is for the people, what is for the people? Who is this man? They say that he claims that God sent him and revealed to him, or that God revealed such-and-such. So I used to memorize those words, as if they were tempting me in my chest, and the Arabs used to blame me. With their conversion to Islam, they say, “Leave him and his people, for if he appears over them, then he is a true prophet.” When the event of the conquest occurred, everyone hastened My people converted to Islam, and my father hastened to convert my people to Islam. When he came, he said, “By God, I have come to you truly from the Prophet.” He said, “Pray with prayer.” Such-and-such, at such-and-such a time, and they prayed such-and-such prayer at such-and-such a time. When the time for prayer comes, let one of you call the call to prayer, and let the one who has the most recited Qur’an lead you in prayer. They looked, but there was no one with the most recited Qur’an.
