Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #28092

Qutaibah narrated to us, Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, on the authority of Al-Alaa ibn Abd al-Rahman, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, it was said: O The Messenger of God, what is backbiting? He said: “He mentioned your brother in a way that he dislikes.” He said: Have you seen if there is in it what I say? He said: “If there is in it what you say He lost You backbited him, and if there was nothing in him that you said, then you slandered him.” He said, and on the authority of Abu Barzah, Ibn Umar, and Abdullah bin Amr. Abu Issa said: This is a good and authentic hadith.
