Hadith #40559
وعن أبي قتادة رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سئل عن صيام يوم عاشوراء فقال‏:‏ ‏ "‏يكفر السنة الماضية‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏
On the authority of Abu Qatada, may God be pleased with him, that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, was asked about fasting on the day of Ashura, and he said: “It expiates the past year” ((Narrated by Muslim)).
