Riyad as-Salihin — Hadith #40605

On the authority of Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, may God be pleased with him, he said: Muawiyah, may God be pleased with him, went out to a group in the mosque and said: Why did I make you sit? They said: We sat remembering God. He said: By God, no one made you sit except that one? They said: We made no sit except that one. He said: As for me, I did not make you take an oath on a charge against you, and no one of my status with the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was less eloquent than me: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, went out on a group of His companions, so he said: “Why did we sit you down?” They said: “We sat remembering God, and praising Him for what He has guided us to Islam, and for bestowing it upon us.” He said: “By God, why did I sit you down except that?” They said: “By God, we did not sit down except that.” He said: “As for me, I did not ask you to swear on a charge against you, but Gabriel came to me.” So tell me that God boasts about you to the angels” ((Narrated by Muslim)).
