Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #44574

Abd al-Razzaq told us, he said: Muammar told us, on the authority of al-Zuhri, on the authority of Salim, on the authority of Ibn Umar, on the authority of Umar, he said: Hafsa bint Umar became a slave of Khunays or Hudhayfah ibn Hudhafah was doubted by Abd al-Razzaq, and he was one of the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and was among those who witnessed Badr. He died in Medina. He said, “I met Uthman bin Affan and presented Hafsa to him. I said, ‘If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa.’ He said, ‘I will look into that.’” So I stayed for several nights and he met me and said, “I do not want to get married on this day.” Omar said, “So I met Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, and I said, ‘If you wish. I married you to Hafsa, the daughter of Omar, but nothing came back to me, so I was more deserving of him than I was of Othman, so I remained for several nights and the Messenger proposed to her. God, may God bless him and grant him peace, so I married her to him, and Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, met me and said, “Perhaps you found fault with me when You presented Hafsa to me, but I did not return anything to you. He said, “Yes.” He said, “Nothing prevented me from returning anything to you when you presented it to me, except that I I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, mention it, but I was not going to reveal the secret of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. He said hello, and if he had left her, he would have married her.
