حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، وَعِصَامُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، وَرَاشِدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، وَغَيْرِهِمَا، قَالُوا لَمَّا بَلَغَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ سَرَغَ حُدِّثَ أَنَّ بِالشَّامِ وَبَاءً شَدِيدًا قَالَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ شِدَّةَ الْوَبَاءِ فِي الشَّامِ فَقُلْتُ إِنْ أَدْرَكَنِي أَجَلِي وَأَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ حَيٌّ اسْتَخْلَفْتُهُ فَإِنْ سَأَلَنِي اللَّهُ لِمَ اسْتَخْلَفْتَهُ عَلَى أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَكَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ أَمِينًا وَأَمِينِي أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ فَأَنْكَرَ الْقَوْمُ ذَلِكَ وَقَالُوا مَا بَالُ عُلْيَا قُرَيْشٍ يَعْنُونَ بَنِي فِهْرٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ فَإِنْ أَدْرَكَنِي أَجَلِي وَقَدْ تُوُفِّيَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ اسْتَخْلَفْتُ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ فَإِنْ سَأَلَنِي رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِمَ اسْتَخْلَفْتَهُ قُلْتُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَكَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ يُحْشَرُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ الْعُلَمَاءِ نَبْذَةً.
Abu Al-Mughirah and Issam bin Khaled told us, they said Safwan told us, on the authority of Shuraih bin Ubaid, Rashid bin Saad, and others, they said when Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, reached Sargh. It happened that there was a severe epidemic in the Levant. He said, “I have been informed that the severity of the epidemic is in the Levant, so I said If my time comes to me while Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah is alive, I will succeed him. If God asks me, why did I succeed him over the nation of Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace? I said, “I heard your Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, say that every prophet has a trustworthy person, and my trustworthy person is Abu Ubaidah bin The surgeon, but the people denied that and said, “What is the matter with Ali?” The Quraysh, meaning Bani Fihr, then he said, “If my death comes to me, and Abu Ubaida: I appointed Muadh ibn Jabal as my successor. If my Lord Almighty asks me why I appointed him as my successor, I will say: I heard your Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace. He says that on the Day of Resurrection a portion will be gathered before the scholars.
