Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #44656

Abd al-A`la ibn Abd al-A`la narrated to us, on the authority of Muammar, on the authority of al-Zuhri, on the authority of Urwa ibn al-Zubayr, on the authority of al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, that Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, said: I heard Hisham Ibn Hakim Ibn Hazzam reciting Surat Al-Furqan, and he recited letters in it, but there was no prophet. He, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, recited it to me. He said, “I wanted to bracelet him while he was praying, so when he finished, I said, ‘Who recited this recitation to you?’ He said The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, I said you lied, by God, that is not how the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, told you. So I took him by the hand and led him, then I went with him to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and I said, O Messenger of God, you have taught me Surat Al-Furqan. And I heard this man reciting letters that you had not recited to me. Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Read, O.” Hisham recited as he had recited, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “This is how it was revealed.” Then he said, “Read, O Omar,” so I recited, and he said like this. It was revealed and then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: The Qur’an was revealed in seven letters.
