حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحِلٌّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ شَقِيقَ بْنَ سَلَمَةَ أَبَا وَائِلٍ يَذْكُرُ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: كَانُوا يُصَلُّونَ خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ الْقَائِلُ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَى اللهِ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم صَلاَتَهُ قَالَ: مَنِ الْقَائِلُ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَى اللهِ؟ إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّلاَمُ، وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا: التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَالَ: وَقَدْ كَانُوا يَتَعَلَّمُونَهَا كَمَا يَتَعَلَّمُ أَحَدُكُمُ السُّورَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ.
Abu Nu`aym told us, he said: Mahal told us, he said: I heard Shaqiq ibn Salamah Abu Wa’il mentioning, on the authority of Ibn Masoud, he said: They used to pray Behind the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. The one who said: Peace be upon God. When the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, finished his prayer, he said: Who is the one who said: Peace be upon God? Indeed, God is peace, but say: Greetings are due to God and prayers and good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and God’s mercy. And His blessings, peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of God. I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad, His servant and Messenger, said: And they were learning it just as one of you learns a surah from the Qur’an.
