Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #48932

On the authority of Abdullah bin Abi Mulaika, he said: A daughter of Uthman bin Affan died in Mecca, and we came to witness her, and Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas, I was sitting between them, and Abdullah bin Omar said to Amr bin Othman while he was facing him: Aren’t you forbidden from crying? For he is the Messenger of God May God’s prayers and peace be upon him, he said: “The dead person is tortured because his family weeps over him.” Ibn Abbas said: Omar used to say some of that. Then he spoke and said: I left with Omar from Mecca until we were in Al-Bayda, and he was riding under the shade of a brown tree, so he said: Go and see who These knees? So I looked and it was Suhaib. He said: So I told him, and he said: Call him. So I returned to Suhaib and said: Go, for the truth is the Commander of the Faithful. When Omar was injured, Suhaib came in crying, saying: Bye. His brother and his two friends. Omar said: O Suhaib, do you cry for me, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said May God bless him and grant him peace: “The dead person is tortured because of some of his family’s crying over him?” Ibn Abbas said: When Omar died, I mentioned that to Aisha, and she said: May God have mercy on Omar. No, by God, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, did not narrate that The dead person is tortured by his family crying over him. But: God increases the torment of the disbeliever by the weeping of his family over him. Aisha said: The Qur’an is sufficient for you: (And no female bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another.) Ibn Abbas said at that: By God, I will laugh and cry. Ibn Abi Mulaika said: Ibn Umar did not say anything.
