Riyad as-Salihin — Hadith #39038

On the authority of Ibn Omar, may God be pleased with them both, that he heard a man say: “No, by the Kaaba.” Ibn Omar said: “Do not swear by anything other than God, for I heard the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, say: “Whoever swears by anything other than God has disbelieved or committed polytheism.” ((Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi and said it is a good hadith)) Some scholars interpreted his saying: “He has disbelieved or committed polytheism.” Exaggeration, as it was narrated that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Hypocrisy is shirk.”
