Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #45647

Abdul Razzaq told us, Muammar told us, on the authority of Ali bin Zayd, on the authority of Al-Hasan, on the authority of Qais bin Abbad, he said, “We were with Ali, may God be pleased with him.” So whenever he saw a scene or overlooked a hill or descended a valley, he would say, Glory be to God. God and His Messenger have spoken the truth. So I said to a man from Bani Thank you. Go with us to the Commander of the Faithful so that we may ask him about his statement. God and His Messenger have spoken the truth. So we went to him and said, O Commander. Believers, we have seen you, when you witnessed a scene, or descended a valley, or overlooked a hill, you said, “God and His Messenger have spoken the truth.” Did the Messenger of God make a covenant? By God, here is something about that. He said, so he turned away from us and we insisted on it. When he saw that, he said, By God, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, did not entrust me. He made a covenant, except for something that he covenanted with the people, but the people attacked Othman, may God be pleased with him, and killed him, and he was different from me. He was worse off in his condition and deed than I was. Then I saw that I had more right to them in this matter, so I stuck to it. God knows whether we were right or not. We made a mistake
