Musnad Ahmad — Hadith #45761

Affan told us, Hammad told us, on the authority of Ata’ bin Al-Sa’ib, on the authority of Abu Dhabyan Al-Janabi, that Omar bin Al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, came With a woman who had committed adultery, so he ordered her to be stoned. They took her to stone her, and Ali, may God be pleased with him, met them and said, “What is this?” They said, “She has committed adultery.” So he ordered. Omar stoned her, so Ali snatched her from their hands and returned them. They returned to Omar, may God be pleased with him, and he said, “What is your response?” They said, “We have returned Ali, may God be pleased with him.” On his authority, he said: This Ali did not do this except for something he had learned. So he sent for Ali, and he came looking like he was angry, and he said, “Why did you respond?” These people said: Did you not hear the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, saying: The pen has been lifted from three: from a sleeper until he wakes up, and from a minor until he wakes up? He grows up and speaks of the afflicted one until he becomes wise. He said, “Yes.” Ali, may God be pleased with him, said, “Indeed, this is the affliction of the children of so-and-so, so perhaps it is He brought it while he was in it, and Omar said, “I don’t know.” He said, “I don’t know,” so he did not stone her.
