Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #48353

On the authority of Anas: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, rode a horse and it fell from its right side, so he prayed one of the prayers while sitting. So we prayed behind him sitting, and when he left, he said: “The imam has only been appointed to be followed, so when he prays standing, they pray standing, so when he kneels.” So bow down, and when he rises, then rise, and when he says, “God hears those who praise Him,” then say, “Our Lord, and to You is praise.” And when he prays standing, pray standing, and when he prays sitting, then pray. All sitting down.” Al-Humaydi said: His saying: “If he prays sitting, pray sitting down” is during his old illness, then he prayed after that. The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was sitting while the people were standing behind him. He did not order them to sit, but rather the last one was taken into account. The last one is from the actions of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him. May God bless him and grant him peace. This is the wording of Bukhari. Muslim agreed with all of them. He added in a narration: “So do not differ over him, and if He prostrated, so prostrate.”
