Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #49392

On the authority of Ubayy ibn Ka’b, he said: I was in the mosque and a man entered and prayed and recited a recitation that I disapproved of for him. Then another man entered and recited a strange recitation. His companion’s recitation. When we finished the prayer, we all joined the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and I said, “This man recited a recitation.” I denied it to him, and another came in and recited something other than his friend’s recitation, so the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, ordered them to recite, and he improved their affairs, and I felt disbelieved in myself, and I did not When I was in pre-Islamic times, when the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, saw what had made me faint, he struck my chest. So I broke out a sweat, as if I was looking at God Almighty in tears, and He said to me: “O my father, a message has been sent to me to recite the Qur’an in one letter. I replied to him, ‘Make it easy for my nation.’” He replied. To me the second, read it in two letters, so I repeated to him, “Make it easy for my nation,” so he returned to me the third, read it in two syllables. Seven letters, and for every response I returned to you, there is a question that you ask me. So I said: O God, forgive my nation, O God, forgive my nation, and I delayed. The third is for a day when the entire creation desires Me, even Abraham, may God bless him and grant him peace. Narrated by Muslim
