Mishkat al-Masabih — Hadith #49400

On the authority of Anas bin Malik: Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman came to Othman and was fighting against the people of the Levant to conquer Armenia and Azerbaijan with the people of Iraq, and Hudhayfah was frightened by their differences in reading. Hudhayfah said to Uthman, O Commander of the Faithful, defeat this nation before That they differ regarding the Book as the Jews and Christians differ, so Othman sent to Hafsa, “Send to us the manuscripts, so that we may transcribe them into the Qur’an.” Then we will return it to you, so Hafsa sent it to Uthman, and he ordered Zayd bin Thabit, Abdullah bin Al-Zubair, Sa’id bin Al-Aas, and Abd Al-Rahman bin Al-Harith bin Hisham, so they transcribed it into the Qur’an, and Othman said to the three Quraishi men, “If you disagree about anything of the Qur’an, So they wrote it in the language of Quraysh, for it was revealed in their language, so they did so, until when they copied the pages into the Qur’an, Othman returned the pages to Hafsa, and he sent to every region a copy of the Qur’an from what they had abrogated, and he commanded that everything other than it from the Qur’an in every page or copy of the Qur’an be burned. Ibn Shihab said. And Kharijah bin Zaid bin Thabit told me that he heard Zaid bin Thabit say, “I missed a verse from Al-Ahzab when we copied the Qur’an. I was listening to the Messenger of God.” May God’s prayers and peace be upon him, reciting it, so we searched for it and found it with Khuzaymah bin Thabit Al-Ansari (among the believers are men who are true to what they promised May God be upon him.) So We added it to its surah in the Qur’an. Narrated by Al-Bukhari
