Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #26660

I heard Ahmad ibn al-Hasan say, “We were with Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and they mentioned for whom Friday is obligatory.” Ahmad did not mention it on the authority of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him. And he said something. Ahmad ibn al-Hasan said, “I said to Ahmad ibn Hanbal about it, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. He said: Ahmad, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. I said yes. Ahmad ibn al-Hasan said, Hajjaj ibn Nusayr narrated to us, Ma’arik ibn Abbad narrated to us, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Saeed Al-Maqbari, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, on the authority of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Friday is upon the one who shelters him at night until... “His family.” He said, “Ahmad ibn Hanbal became angry with me and said to me, ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord. Ask forgiveness from your Lord.’ Abu Issa said, ‘Ahmad only did it.’” Ibn Hanbal said this because he did not consider this hadith to be anything and he considered it weak due to its chain of transmission.
