Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #27395

Abu Musa told us, Muhammad bin Muthanna told us, Abdul Rahman bin Mahdi told us, on the authority of Hammad bin Salamah, on the authority of Qatada, on the authority of Al-Hasan, on the authority of Samurah, The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, forbade selling an animal for a bad animal. He said, and in the chapter on the authority of Ibn Abbas, Jabir, and Ibn Umar. Abu Issa said the hadith of Samurah is a good and authentic hadith. And Al-Hasan’s hearing from Samurah is authentic. This is what Ali bin Al-Madini and others said. This is acted upon according to most of the people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and others, when selling an animal for another is bad. This is the opinion of Sufyan al-Thawri and the people of Kufa, and this is what Ahmad says. Some of the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, have permitted it. And others say that selling an animal for another animal is bad, and this is the opinion of Al-Shafi’i and Ishaq.
