Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #27908

Ishaq ibn Musa al-Ansari narrated to us, Ma’an narrated to us, Malik narrated to us, on the authority of Abu al-Nadr, on the authority of Ubayd Allah ibn Utbah, that he entered upon Abu Talha Al-Ansari was visiting him. He said, “I found Sahl bin Hunaif with him.” He said, “So Abu Talha called a person to remove a pattern from underneath it.” Sahl said to him, “Why did you remove it?” He said, “Because it contains images, and the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘You have not learned.’” Sahl said, “Did he not say, ‘Except what it was? A number on a garment.” He said, “Yes, but it is better for myself.” Abu Issa said, “This is a good and authentic hadith.”
