Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #29777

Muhammad ibn Bashar al-Abdi narrated to us, Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us, my father narrated to us, he said, I heard Muhammad ibn Ishaq, speaking on the authority of al-Muttalib ibn Abdullah bin Qais bin Makhramah, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather, he said: I and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, were born in the year of the Elephant. He asked Othman bin Affan Qubath bin Ashim, brother of Banu Yamar bin Laith, are you greater or the mother of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace? So the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Are you greater?” From me, and I am older than him in birth. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, was born in the year of the Elephant, and my mother raised me in that place. He said And I saw the elephant’s cheek was green and wiry. Abu Issa said: This is a good and strange hadith. We do not know it except from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq.
