Jami' at-Tirmidhi — Hadith #29870

Qutaibah narrated to us, he said, Ja`far bin Sulaiman al-Dhab’i narrated to us, on the authority of Yazid al-Rashk, on the authority of Mutarrif bin Abdullah, on the authority of Imran bin Husayn, he said The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, sent an army and appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib over them, so he went on the expedition and killed a slave girl. So they denounced him, and four of the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, joined forces and said, “If we meet the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, we will tell him what Ali did.” When the Muslims returned from a journey, they would start with the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and greet him, then they would go to When the group arrived, they greeted the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. Then one of the four stood up and said, “O Messenger of God, have you not seen Ali bin Abi Talib do such-and-such?” And so on. Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, turned away from it. Then the second one stood up and said something similar to what he said, but he turned away from it. Then the third rose up to him and said the same as what he said, but he turned away from it. Then the fourth rose and said the same as what they said, so the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, came to him. And anger was evident on his face, so he said, “Whatever you want from Ali, whatever you want from Ali, whatever you want from Ali, Ali is from me.” And I am from him, and he is the guardian of every believer after me.” Abu Issa said, “This is a good, strange hadith.
